Furry Feng Shui

Feng Shui — Tags: , , , , — Artfully Painted Pets @ 7:17 am

Brenda Peisinger asked:

Many of us feel the need to please and communicate with our furry family members, and one way of doing that is to consider our pets when we organize and decorate our homes. When designing an animal-friendly home, Feng Shui principles can create an environment that benefits you and your pet. Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese philosophy in which basic concepts of energy, balance, and connectiveness are used to create an environment that supports your unique intentions.

Feng Shui (pronounced fung schway) is associated with five elements (fire, earth, metal, water, and wood), and each element with its colors, smells, and shapes can be used to create environments according to our intentions. There are some basic Feng Shui concepts we can use to nurture a new puppy or to provide a comfortable and safe environment for our aging friends. We need to use space as a tool, while also remaining cognizant that the colors we choose for bedding, the shapes we use for food dishes, and even the floor and fabric choices in our homes should be intentionally chosen to meet the needs of our pets while contributing to the warmth and loving environment of our homes. Implementing new and exciting elements in a manner that will improve or correct unfavorable conditions in your living space is often simple and inexpensive.

A new puppy in the home brings renewed energy, love, and excitement with all the possibilities life has to offer. They are our “yang” energies, full of life, energy, and playfulness. However, for a dog, being in a new environment can bring fear and insecurities. Our puppies need stability, groundedness, and security. Adding some “yin” in the environment will help balance their energies, especially at bedtime.

According to Feng Shui principles, the Earth element gives one a sense of belonging, permanence, and a feeling of connectedness. When looking for bedding or blankets for a new puppy, rely on the Earth element by incorporating the earth tone colors (brown, yellow, terra cotta, sand tones, gray) with a square pattern. In all your decision-making, keep in mind the way dogs see color. Humans see a full spectrum of colors, while studies show that the dog’s world consists of yellows, blues, and grays. Like a human with red-green color blindness, they are unable to tell the difference between red and green. When a human perceives a red object, it appears yellow to the dog.

Crating your new family member is another way to give them a feeling of security or a sense of a “cave”. Whether or not you will be crating, place his/her bedding in a corner away from doors and with as little activity and drafts as possible. There are wonderful “dens” on the market that replicate nature. These den environments provide a feeling of warmth, security, and privacy, while also integrating the life source of nature.

Our older friends need the same consideration when it comes to home design and planning. There are wonderful products on the market that offer orthopedic beds for aching joints. Like a new puppy, our older friends may at times have “accidents” and choosing bedding with fabrics that prevents moisture, bacteria, and stains from accumulating in the fibers, allows for a more pleasing experience for both humans and pets. Crypton fabric washes like a dream, and offers freedom in design with little worry about wear and tear.

Failing eyesight can be an issue with our elderly dogs, and the principles of “way finding” (used by hospitals and nursing homes) can be utilized. Our pets cannot read letters, but they understand the difference between a hard surface (wood floor) and a soft surface (carpet). By adding simple elements we can make it easier and less stressful for our pets to find their familiar way to their food, beds, or a comfortable spot on our laps or by our feet. Using runners or carpets that lead to food and elimination areas assists pets in finding their way, with less stress and more accuracy. Remember to use non-skid matting under your carpets or runners. This can reduce stress and anxiety for an animal, ensuring firm footedness (or pawness). Rearranging furniture should be considered very carefully with an older dog, as it can cause stress and confusion in an animal that knows exactly where things used to be.

You can also take advantage of your dog’s most highly developed sense – the sense of smell – to make them more comfortable in your home. Dogs have about 25 times more olfactory (smell) receptors than humans do. Knowing the characteristics of each smell, and their properties, allows us to consciously use them where they are most needed. As humans, we respond to the pleasant and calming smell of lavender, and know the energetic feeling of sniffing peppermint. This is the same for dogs. To aid “way finding” in your home, use a scent that will call your dog to the action you wish them to take. For instance, using one aroma where your dog’s food and water bowl is located, like peppermint or spearmint, can guide them in the right direction when it is time to eat. You might want to use a different aroma leading them toward their elimination area or toward the door, like an earthy or woodsy scent.

Part of creating a healthy, happy, balanced home for your pet is removing as many toxins as possible from your environment. Take into consideration the Volatile Organic Chemical (VOC) in paints. When using paints in your remodeling, find those with zero VOC. Paint emits off-gas (that terrible paint smell we have experienced) and continues to expend toxins for up to 18 months after application, affecting breathing. Keep your environment healthy by being aware of these and other toxins in cleaning, hygiene and beauty products.

Another way to bring Feng Shui to dogs of any age is to utilize the properties of the Water element. Feng Shui’s Water element, represented in blue and black, augments digestion, allowing more time to relax. This makes a perfect color combination for food bowls and dining rooms, for instance. Providing a food dish for your dog that is black or blue will allow your pet to slow down the eating process, especially helpful if your dog has a tendency to gulp down his/her food. Combine these colors with the Earth element’s square shape to further assist in slower digestion. Avoid round food dishes (the Metal element) as this will cause your pet to eat more since circles will not allow our eyes to rest on one spot but your pet will continually search round and round for food. Keep in mind that water and food bowls should be elevated to make eating and drinking easier, especially for elderly animals. It is recommended that feeding and watering bowls be positioned about six inches below the pet’s wither height (top of its front shoulder). For small dogs, subtract four inches. You can also find square and elevated food and water bowls for your pets that are aesthetically pleasing so they complement your existing décor.

Dogs also use other cues such as texture, brightness, and position to adapt to their environment. Experiment with various textures throughout your home and you may find more ways to make your furry friend comfortable.

By planning around your dog’s habits and personality, and by applying the appropriate Feng Shui elements, you can achieve balance in the life of your pet and for everyone sharing your space. Using Feng Shui’s principles and elements in your animal-friendly design can empower the spirit and environment not only for you, for also for your furry companion.

Pet Photography As A Business

Pets — Tags: , , , , — Artfully Painted Pets @ 5:07 am
So you’ve decided to try to tap into the growing photographic demands of a larger than ever pet owner population! I applaud your decision.

The pet industry was exploding by incredible leaps and bounds even prior to the advent of the Internet. The ready availability of pet-based products that tapped into this new avenue for trade multiplied exponentially.

There are certainly a number of sites available where you can purchase almost anything you can imagine for your furry home companions, but as a professional pet photographer, I would like to stick to what I know and what I do best.

I take pictures!

Now, you are probably saying to yourself that you take pictures too, and that doesn’t qualify you as a profesional pet photographer. What makes me so special? The answer is that people are willing to pay me to take pictures for them and I manage to sell a goodly number of pet photo related items as well.

But let’s, for arguments sake, say that you take a picture that captures a special quality in someone’s pet that makes them ask if they can buy a copy. THAT is your introduction into the world of pet photography as a business; and here is where you can get bogged down.

There are thousands, literally thousands, of books about how to go about a start-up business and all of them probably have something worthwhile to offer. You need to remember that most of these books are in the business of selling books, not knowledge. It’s rather like the “Make Zillions in Real Estate” infomercials that promise you will quadruple your income in three days if you buy their program. Well, the owner of the program will undoubtedly make zillions, but most of it will come from selling you the program not necessarily from you using the information in the program!

Don’t get me wrong! There are books out there that will be of help to you. You just need to be careful about what advice it is you really need in order to create a business out of pet photography.

First! Define yourself.

Are you predominantly an artist or a photographer? Yes, of course you can be both. The question is, do you want to create pet portraits that are true works of art similar to professionally done portrait paintings? Do you plan to make as much of a statement about yourself as the artist as you do about the subject of your photograph? Do you want to develop the ability to capture the special relationship between an owner and his or her pet? Or do you simply want to go for the owner who wants a nice framed photo to acknowledge that their pet is truly a beloved member of the family whose photo deserves to be placed in a position of honor on the mantle place with the rest of the family?

These are important questions to ask yourself before you begin. I do not mean to suggest that you must choose one mindset over another. It will simply be easier to create a viable business plan for yourself as a professional photographer if you make yourself aware of your target audience and make yourself able to adapt to their specific needs. You will find that once you determine the sort of photography you wish to offer, the interview process between yourself and the prospective client will be the most important part of the process.

It is imperative that you be able to grasp the dynamic existing between the pet and owner. This will likely be a purely intuitive exercise on your part since the way the owner sees a pet is not always the way the relationship will come across. Are they overly affectionate and cutesy-adorable together? Do they enjoy roughhousing and outdoor activities? Are they quiet and sedentary together? These observations will give you insight into what the owner expects to see when they look at your interpretation of their bond with their pet. The portrait must reflect not only the personality of the pet, but the owner’s perception of that personality as well.

Pricing! I would suggest a sitting fee that is non-refundable. If someone is unwilling to recognize that your time is valuable, then they will likely be unwilling to pay for any photo packages afterward. A “sitting fee” requires a commitment up front that encourages a professional atmosphere on both sides. The owner realizes that they are paying for the privilege and you recognize that you have an obligation to the owner.

Franchises? With all the new avenues open to pet photographers both at the entry level and the professional level it is inevitable that the subject of franchising will come up. There is a built-in safety net when you choose to go with an established franchise, both in the formulaic manner in which they operate and in the general public awareness of a known “name.” But this comes at a cost and I don’t believe it is necessary for every start-up pet photography business. I would encourage you to research as many as possible and carefully peruse your own business plan to see if it is worth the extra expense for a limited amount of security.

You CAN do this on your own. You CAN become a professional in your own home with pet photography. You can become the “go to” photographer in your community. You just have to get out there and get yourself known. Volunteer your services at the local animal shelter. Take the opportunity to do “pro bono” (free) photos for special occasions that have built in press coverage. Get cards made up and pin them everywhere you can. The bottom line is…have fun with it! The best thing you can do in your life is find something you love to do and then find a way to make a living at it.

Halloween Ideas No Trick or Treat for Kids and Pets

Home And Family — Tags: , , , , — Artfully Painted Pets @ 3:50 pm
Kacy Carr asked:

If ever there was a time that kids loved to dress up is on the 31st of October (Halloween night), however in saying that, so do the biggest majority of big kids to (adults). Halloween is time a for having fun and throwing parties so therefore the reason behind much excitement the kids show when trying on their ghoulish Halloween costumes.

The earlier your plans are sanctioned for a Halloween party the better so as not to have to last minute hiccups which cause disappointment e.g. delivery of the wrong size Halloween costume you ordered from the fancy dress store. With the world the way it is today parents are desperate to protect their children and if that means forbidding them to go trick or treating then so be it. If this decision be made in your household then there are plenty of ways to put a smile back on the kiddie’s faces behind their devilish masks

One way to overcome this is to accompany your children on the evening; you will be surprised just how much fun it can be. By going along with the little ones dressed up as imps you can get a better understanding of why that in past years when it was safe for them to go out alone they get so excited.

Another solution is to throw a Halloween party if you have commitments preventing you from trick or treating with the kids. Under your supervision, leave the kids in charge and allow them to answer other trick or treaters who come knocking at your door. Let the children donate sweets money or edibles; another good idea is to let the children help you bake monster cookies to give as a treat.

It can prove to be cost affective if your neighbours who feel the same as you on the matter about children trick or treating alone come together in unison and share the cost of throwing a Halloween street party, by doing this responsibilities can be divided between each family participating. Families can be allotted a particular task i.e. preparing the food, hanging up decorations or organizing the entertainment, i.e. games music and competitions like for the best Halloween costume.

Other Activities for your party to keep the kids happy can include the popular Halloween pumpkin decorating. What is needed for this are acrylic paints, brushes, paint pens, other art supplies for decorating pumpkins. Always supervise young children and allow for mess.

Give the children their own personalized trick or treat bag and fill it full of their favourite yummies, candy will be welcomed along with a surprise novelty wrapped up inside. Halloween games come no better that the hot favourite Halloween bone hunt, for this game you will need small plastic bones; prizes, be careful with young toddlers and small particles.

Get enough bones for each child. Mark some of the bones as prize bones. Scatter the bones throughout the party area. If the kids start to show signs of boredom announce the Halloween bone hunt and watch their faces light up knowing they have to run a bone hunt. If you forget the bones I’m sure a creative mind will have you think of something else like hiding dollar bills.

Kids love movies and especially scary ones, however you may have those in contrast so be careful what movies on DVD you tend on showing, although its Halloween we don’t want the kids having nightmares.

Halloween night just like bonfire night can include fireworks being set off to liven up the occasion so as well as protecting your kids protect your pets too by keeping them at home where they will be safe warm and out of harms way.

Brighten Your Decor With Hand-painted Ceramic Tile

Interior Design — Tags: , , , , — Artfully Painted Pets @ 2:52 am
At one time, ceramic art tile was only for the wealthy.  No more.  Today, for the same price as you will pay for manufactured cast resin, imitation marble or other polymer, you can have  one-of-a-kind hand painted ceramic art tiles, made by an American artist who is willing to work with YOUR ideas and concepts.

Suppose you love plants and flowers, but the wall over your sink in the kitchen has no window?  Tell the artist your favorites, she will paint your favorite ferns or perennials, in a basket or within its own little garden on art tile.

What if you moved south and miss your paper birch trees so badly?  A mural over your bathroom sink of these gorgeous white and black trees, with or without surrounding fall

foliage, will guarantee a lifetime of the perfect view.

No wall space for a mural?  How about ceramic accent tiles placed every foot or so of your favorite cooking herbs in an 1800’s style, right out of the Farmer’s Almanac?  Or an easy-to-clean backsplash behind the kitchen sink of fruits connected by flowering vines all in a lively color scheme?

The best part about tile is you only have to do it once.  You choose timeless and tireless motifs and place them where you need something durable.  Side-by-side with gold,

ceramic is the most durable substance we know.  What else has told us the history of human culture as accurately?  Nothing the manufacturers have come up with can surpass

ceramic tile for lasting beauty.  Nothing.

Working with an artist as opposed to a factory has many benefits.  The artist has sentimental  memories too, and usually does the work she does for other reasons than moving

out volumes of product for profit, so she is more than happy to fill your space with warm homey decoration.

We all have a favorite old pattern or print, maybe Grandma’s stitching or an old tapestry.  Everything eventually wears out and must be discarded.  Except ceramic.  Have it painted on tile and installed  for all time.

Framed paintings do not do well in steamy bathrooms or near greasy cookstoves, gathering dust and needing cleaning way too often.  A tapestry or rug painted on tile will hang beautifully inlaid into any wall.  In the hall where people always bump paintings is a great idea.  Stair risers that always get scuffed up can be painted in a myriad of design motifs, like southwestern, Mayan or Aztec, any colorful design, and fill a dull stairway with brilliant

color.

Do you work too many hours to have pets?  A brilliant parrot on the wall in the corner of your livingroom, gleaming feathers shining, will welcome you home, making no noise and quietly demanding no food or attention!  No other art medium can imitate the iridescence and brilliance of bird feathers like ceramic glaze.  A skilled hand-painter can imitate textures and colored objects from all around the world.  Mayan stone carvings, Egyptian hieroglyphics, even cave art paintings all look so real in ceramic.

Solid blocks of color in modern graphic shapes is the other end of the design spectrum.  Color makes a very powerful statement, as we all know.

Please do not feel compelled to use what the remodelling stores offer, the dull and unimaginative and very plain tiles they sell in volume.  Email a hand-painter

and she will help you come up with the only one in the world, a unique piece of fine art that is yours alone.

Timeless and elegant decor is only a few weeks away.
